The Format of the FAW Premier Cup

The composition of the competition for 2006/2007 & 2007/2008 will be the same as in past seasons with 16 clubs, the three Nationwide clubs, the two best placed clubs from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County from the preceding season, along with the Welsh Cup winners and the clubs that finish in the top ten places in the preceding Welsh Premier League season. Should the Welsh Cup winner qualify as a result of finishing in the top ten places in the Welsh Premier League, the final club shall be the one that finishes 11th in the preceding Welsh Premier League season. Cardiff City, Swansea City, Total Network Solutions and Wrexham automatically qualify for the quarter final stage of the competition, but will be drawn away in the 2005/06 season as in the past two seasons

All the competing clubs have to comply with the entry requirements of the competition/league in which they normally compete. *

Newport County 2008The competition will comprise of five rounds of knock out, one-legged matches to be played to a conclusion on that day/night, by extra time and penalties if necessary. The first round will consist of four matches with the eight teams being the second placed from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County (For season 2006/07 this will be Merthyr Tydfil), and the seven lowest placed from the Welsh Premier League. The second round will consist of four matches with the eight teams being the four winners from round 1, the top club from Colwyn Bay, Merthyr Tydfil and Newport County (For the season 2007/08 this will be Newport County) and the two Welsh Premier League clubs finishing 2nd, 3rd or 4th and Welsh Cup winners. Cardiff City, Swansea City and Wrexham and the League of Wales champions from the previous season will be seeded to the quarter final. The draw for rounds 1 and 2 will be open.

8 Teams qualify for the Quarter Finals, with the four winners from Round 2 being guaranteed a home draw.

For Rounds 1 and 2 and the Semi Finals, the club who are drawn first will be at home in a single tie.



Prize Money

The Prize Money is allocated as follows:
  1. £5,000 to each of the 4 clubs who lose in Round 1.
  2. £7,000 to each of the 4 clubs who lose in Round 2.
  3. £15,000 to each club losing in the quarter finals.
  4. £25,000 to each club losing in the semi-finals.
  5. £50,000 to the club losing in the final.
  6. £100,000 to the winning Club
  7. £7,500 facility fee for each match televised "live" on BBC Wales to be split between the two competing clubs.
* Should for any reason, the home club not be able to provide the necessary television facilities for a "live" game, the fixture can be reversed.
